Private chauffeur, ride-hailing or taxi in Paris: what is the real difference?

In short

Three ways to be driven in Paris

Visitors often use the three words interchangeably, and in Paris they are not the same thing. A taxi is a regulated public service with a meter. A ride-hailing car is booked through an app. A private chauffeur is a car and a driver reserved in advance for a specific journey, or for a whole day.

One point of law is worth knowing: in France, private chauffeur companies and app drivers work under the same regulated status, known as VTC, with a professional card for every driver. What separates them is not the licence but the way the service is organised.

The taxi

Paris taxis are the only vehicles allowed to pick up passengers on the street or at a rank without a booking. In town they run on a meter; to and from the airports they apply a flat fare set by the prefecture: in 2026, €56 or €65 to Charles de Gaulle and €36 or €45 to Orly, depending on the bank of the Seine.

Their strengths are availability and a regulated price. Their limits: you take the car at the front of the queue, whatever its size, the wait at a rank can be long when several flights land together, and you do not know the driver in advance.

Ride-hailing apps

A ride-hailing car cannot be hailed in the street: it must be booked, almost always through an app. The price is shown before you confirm, but it moves with demand, and rises sharply at exactly the moments when everyone needs a car: rain, the end of a show, several long-haul flights landing together.

It is practical for a short ride in town. It is less suited to a schedule that may change: if your flight is delayed, the booking may be lost and rebooked at whatever the price is by then, and the pickup point at an airport is usually some distance from the arrivals exit.

The private chauffeur

A private chauffeur is booked in advance, on a fixed quote agreed in writing. The price does not move with traffic or demand, and it already includes what an app counts separately: waiting time, tolls, child seats when needed.

The service is built around the journey rather than the ride. The chauffeur tracks your flight or train, waits inside the terminal with a name board, takes the luggage, and is the same person from the first pick-up to the last when the car is booked by the hour. You choose the vehicle, from an E-Class to a V-Class for seven passengers or a Rolls-Royce: see the fleet.

The differences that matter

Booking. Taxi: on the spot or by phone. Ride-hailing: through an app, minutes before. Private chauffeur: in advance, with a written confirmation.

Price. Taxi: meter in town, flat fare to the airports. Ride-hailing: variable with demand. Private chauffeur: fixed quote, known before the journey.

Delays. Taxi and ride-hailing: your problem. Private chauffeur: the flight is tracked and the pick-up moves automatically.

Vehicle and driver. Taxi and ride-hailing: whatever arrives. Private chauffeur: the car you chose, and a chauffeur who knows your schedule.

Waiting. Taxi and ride-hailing: every stop is a new ride. Private chauffeur: the car waits between appointments.

Which one for which journey

A short ride in town, alone, without luggage: a taxi or an app does the job.

An airport arrival with luggage, children or after a long flight: a private transfer, with the chauffeur waiting inside the terminal. We compared every option in our guides to Charles de Gaulle and Orly.

A day of meetings, shopping or visits: a car held by the hour, so every change of plan costs nothing.

An occasion where the car matters: a wedding, a gala, an important guest. Only a private chauffeur lets you choose the vehicle and the standard of service.

Getting a quote

Every journey is different, so we quote each one individually: the route, the vehicle, the timing and the options you need. Send us your request through the booking form, by email or on WhatsApp, and we reply with a fixed price, confirmed in writing before anything is booked.
